Sharon Regional receives award for patient care

VHA Inc., the national health care alliance, has recognized Sharon Regional Health System for demonstrating excellence in patient care. Sharon Regional is one of three qualifying VHA Pennsylvania hospitals to receive an Achieving Patient Care Excellence (APEX) award as a leading performer in falls prevention.

In earning the award, Sharon Regional’s Fall Prevention Team, led by Paula Cica, R.N., director of quality, developed an aggressive fall prevention program. The program included fall prevention strategies such as frequent rounding on high risk patients, using bed and chair alarms, moving at-risk patients closer to nursing stations, participating in a Physician-Patient Safety Symposium, using multiple indicators in the rooms of at-risk patients to alert staff, and much more.

The team, consisting of nursing leadership from units throughout Sharon Regional, included Jet Comfort, Jennifer O’Rourke, Michaelene Gula, Marsha Park, Bernadette Hetrick, Lynell Piccirillo, Linda Lucas, Mary Grace Pruchnic, Shannon Mollenkopf, Bernadine Yuran, and Lise Ordak.

Mark Tino, VP of performance improvement for the East Coast and Pennsylvania Regions of VHA, presented the award at Sharon Regional. “I’m extremely pleased to recognize Sharon Regional and their fall prevention program for achieving this level of excellence,” said Tino. “I spend a great deal of time visiting our member hospitals and it’s easy to see that Sharon Regional has taken a leading role in developing successful strategies to protect their patients from accidental falls.”

APEX awards are designed to honor organizations that have differentiated themselves by demonstrating extraordinary levels of clinical performance. The recognition program is open to all members of the VHA Pennsylvania region.
